A popular film director Pablo (Poncela) is frustrated by his relationship with his straight acting lover (Molina), who decides to have some time apart in the countryside. Itching to fill the gap in his life is the handsome and horny Antonio (Banderas), an obsessive fan of Pablo’s homo-erotic movies.
One of Almodóvar’s most teasingly autobiographical movies, Law of Desire clearly foreshadows Bad Education in its depiction of a complex relationship between film-maker and fan. Banderas delivers an edgier, more sexually-charged performance than anything which followed in his Hollywood career, while Maura rises magnificently to the challenge of playing Pablo’s emotionally vulnerable, transsexual sister.
