Pan's Labyrinth is a fantastical and chilling story set in rural Spain, against the backdrop of the fascist regime in 1944. The film centers on Ofelia, a dreamy child living with her mother and adoptive father, a military officer tasked with ridding the area of rebels. In her loneliness, Ofelia creates a world filled with fantastical creatures and secret destinies. With the repression which followed the Spanish Civil War at its height, Ofelia must come to terms with her world through a fable of her own creation. Guillermo del Toro’s masterpiece is a dazzling blend of the war and fantasy genres which won three Academy Awards®.
